 Good, Bad and downright Ugly

Howdy folks! Sorry for the lack of articles - life is busy as hell over here in Dubai, plus the lack of wrestling on TV just plain sucks, so I'm relying on the internet to catch up. We get RAW here about 2 weeks late, but the positive thing is that its condensed to about and 80 min show, therefore a lot of the crap gets cut-out.

So, some random thoughts...

TNA moving back to Thursday nights may be the logical step, now that they tested the waters to see how they fared going up against RAW. I think this had to be tried, and fair play to them, they tried everything. I was even surprised the RVD title win did not secure them a helluva lot more viewers from the diabolical RAW that night (hurried together because of the stranded RAW roster from the volcano ash). But, the move back to thursdays was handled terribly! "TNA have listened to the fans and given them what they want"? Please, we're not that stupid. Own up, be honest, say you crashed and burned this time around, but what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. That kind of approach would not have insulted the TNA fans and may have even have rallied them up a bit!

So, moving on. Considering, this bad marketing strategy, something TNA are doing very well is the mic work of the roster. Seriously, they have the WWE beat to a pulp on this. Finally, they are going old-school and from what I can see, letting the guys and gals run with the ball for a bit. Jay lethal is back in the picture and is playing of AJ and Flair nicely. Ken Anderson is just a god with the microphone and the audience. What the guy lacks (and not much) in matches, he more than makes up for it in charisma. When he's talking, he's the closest anyone has come to commanding attention like The Rock did. Unpredictable, genuinely funny, excellent psychology, engaging and interacting with the audience. The guy has IT. Hell, even Jeff Hardy is starting to win me over! I like his ring-work, but I was never struck with him as a character. Now he is starting to show me more and more. So he may be high on the night, but hell, its working isn't it?! At least he shows up to work and acts like a professional (take note Carlito, Scott Hall). His promo with Ken for Sacrifice a few weeks back was great TV! Well done to Eric, Hulk and the management - you guys are on the right path with this. You are starting to forge some likeable, interesting characters that fans can believe in, get behind and be entertained by. I only wish Vince would take note of this, because I'm getting seriously bored by the guys bleating out the same scripted crap week after week. Its insulting to the fans and it is crushing the development of the younger talent.

Oh, final word for TNA - the Angle/Anderson cage match.....match of the year in my book so far. Absolutely awesome, you could even tell just how good it was by the commentary, I'm pretty sure Taz was at a loss for words at the Moonsault. Angle just keeps getting better and better.

Onto the WWE. Well, if you needed any further proof that Vince positions Smackdown second to RAW, look no further than the demotion to the ScyFy (did I spell that right?) network and the poor hand they got dealt with in the draft. Seriously, its like Vince woke up and instead of seeing 'Smackdown' he saw 'ECW'. Sure, they got the criminally underused Christian (who should be a main-eventer by now), Kofi and to a lesser degree Jack Swagger, but lets face it, Vince put all his favourite eggs in one basket. I may be wrong, it may help to elevate and give breathing room to the newer, younger guys on Smackdown. Its a weaker roster thats for sure, so it will be interesting to see who runs with the gold this year, but apart from Rey, Taker and Big Show, who else is going to be a genuine contender and future champion? *cough* Christian please *cough*.

I haven't seen any of NXT really, but it seems clear to me that Daniel Bryan will win it or will move onwards and upwards until Vince crushes him like Evan Bourne. So, onto RAW. Please, please, please kill this guest host crap already. Its just not fun anymore, and its also hurting some of the guys who are just used for 'comedic' effect ...or creative being very lazy. Santino with his costume of the week. The Bella twins hanging off the arms of every male host. Mark Henry being the fill-in 'go-to' guy as a surprise opponent. Koslov and Regal acting like a new-age Laurel & Hardy ....and don't get me started on Goldust. Please just get a genuinely interesting RAW GM put in place. Hell, I thought William Regal did a bang-up job in the role. Perhaps with Koslov and/or Jackson as his 'protection', we could get a entertainingly dislikeable character that could go the distance.

Nice to see Randy Orton develop from his one-dimensional character into an interesting anti-hero babyface. Also loving the Million Dollar Man Version 2.0 in Ted Dibiase, bringing back the title and Virgil too! This 'fortunate sons' stable could be entertaining too if it ever gets off the ground. Also on the plus side is the chemistry with Miz and Jericho. Personally I want to see Jericho as champion, but this is the next best thing and will only help Miz to become better. John Morrison on RAW is a good thing too, I've always been a huge fan of his work and I can genuinely believe that he could be the next HBK if helped and pushed the right way. His clean-cut babyface thing though isn't quite right, his character should include some level of arrogance to match his look.

On the down-side, I cannot see any reason why Bret would be given the US title. It just doesn't make any sense to me. True, it was awesome to see him actually win the title itself, but lets not kid ourselves here, the guy is very limited in what he can do physically, and I hope he does the right thing for the guys and not try to defend it on a competitor-level. Not sure where this is going, and WWE having been missing way more than they've been hitting in recent months. Also on the downside is your stereotypical heel character Sheamus. Boring, boring, boring. I honestly think he should've been moved to Smackdown, but since HHH and Vince are keen on him, he will remain I guess. Cena also needs to do something different to freshen things up a bit. His character is getting stale, so are his promos. Not to put the guy down intentionally, as everyone knows the guy is a machine, working harder than anyone else on the roster, and he gives it his all. Its just he's not given much to work with by creative, and because WWE is PG13 (and will remain so for a long, long, time) his character will not change, so long gone is the edgy rapper gimmick, shame really.

Right, predictions for Over the Limit (aka: "filler PPV that probably wont change much and we will see the same match-ups free on tv in the following few weeks anyway"):

Cena V Batista, I Quit, WWE Title
Well, this will be another case of the PG13 crap watering down what is meant to be a brutal match. Compare this match when it is done, to the matches Rock, Mankind, Austin, HHH had 10 years ago. Anyway, I doubt this will really offer much and the outcome will depend on Dave's contract status. Either way I predict a Cena win and a new number 1 contender.

Swagger V Big Show, Heavyweight Title
Big Show will do his best here to make the match entertaining, but it's a mis-match of styles and Jack is nowhere near experienced enough to carry it and make it worthwhile. I predict Swagger to win to try and elevate his status as a champ.

Drew McIntyre V Kofi, Intercontinental Title
I predict a Kofi win. Could be entertaining and a fresh new feud.

Punk V Mysterio, Hair V SES Membership
While I think it would be way more interesting to see Rey join the SES, I think Punk will be bald at the end. I also think Joey Mercury will be revealed.

Orton V Edge
Like Trev Winters predicted, I think this could steal the show.

Hart Dynasty V Miz/Jericho (or will it be JeriMiz, or even Mizicho???)
Looking forward to seeing what diabolical mix of ring-intro's await us here for Miz and Jericho. SHould be a solid entertaining match, perhaps with Jericho and Bret Hart interaction. I see a Hart win and the feud to continue.

R-Truth V Ted Dibiase
Decent enough match, not much to get excited about really. Some kind of twist would be nice, such as the 'Fortunate Sons' stable forming with a beat-down to Truth and Morrison. Maybe even a Morrison heel-turn??

Eve V Maryse, Diva title
In terms of ring skills, the WWE Women's division is a joke and needs considerable work. Come back Trish and Lita, all is forgiven!!!

Anyway, that'll do for me. I'll leave you with a thought to ponder. It seems that Jim Ross' WWE commentary days are done, which is horrible to realise. Then again, could it be that these TNA talks are true? Shame because Mike Tenay is starting to work well with TAZ. Or, could it be that Jim goes in a new direction and we see him calling action in the Octagon soon?? He would be a good fit. Lets face it, wherever Jim goes from here he will be welcomed with open arms and well respected. Rightfully so too, the man is a legend and should have called HBK's last match. Good luck Jim!
